ABOUT SOZNI

TRADITION
The making of pashmina textiles has been an ongoing tradition in Kashmir for more than five centuries. From the spinning and dyeing of the thread, to its weaving, to the fine needle embroidery, each part of the process has been done completely by hand. At Sozni, we collaborate directly with the most skilled artisans of Kashmir who continue to work in this tradition, while encouraging them to bridge the past and present by incorporating contemporary design elements into their craft.

PRESTIGE
Historically, the Kashmiri shawl was worn by Indian royalty as a symbol of prestige. After the European encounter with the subcontinent, the shawl was popularized as a status symbol amongst European high society. Despite numerous and sustained attempts to produce the shawl outside of Kashmir, it was never able to be duplicated because of the masterful craftsmanship of the Kashmiri artisan, which furthered the shawl’s exclusivity and made it highly sought after.

LUXURY
At Sozni, we pride ourself on staying true to the artisanal tradition by using only the highest quality materials in the making of our collection. No piece is at any point touched by a machine, rendering it completely handmade and truly one-of-a-kind. In an era of mass production, our collection is a vestige of old world luxury, with each piece patiently and lovingly pored over by a masterful hand.

QUALITY
In order to take advantage of the connotations the word ‘pashmina’ conjures up, it has been deliberately misused to describe any fabric that is draped over the shoulders. In reality, pashmina is the most luxurious natural fiber there is, harvested from the coat of a mountain dwelling Tibetan goat. Furthermore, the mixing of other fibers with pashmina, as well as the machine weaving of pashmina blends, has become commonplace in order to save on cost. Our collection is guaranteed 100% pure pashmina and never mixed with any other fiber. This purity means a superior product that is luxuriously soft, light and warm and unparalleled in quality.

INTEGRITY
Sozni pieces are crafted in an almost forgotten way. The time, patience, skill and creativity of each artisan making our products are woven into each piece, thread by thread. Our goal is to revive this incredibly beautiful age old tradition that is on the verge of extinction due to industrialization, product misrepresentation and exploitation of craftspeople. In the face of such challenges, we strive to maintain a sense of integrity within our company that manifests itself in our adherence to strict quality control measures, reliance on only traditional methods of production and encouragement of and fairness towards the artisans with whom we work.
